Kentucky Gov. Beshear Extends Gas Tax Reduction for 33 Cities, Counties
The extension keeps the 10-cent reduction in place for 33 communities, while state officials estimate it cuts Road Fund revenue by $26.8 million a month.
On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear extended a 10-cent gas tax reduction through June 30 for 33 Kentucky cities and counties, including Louisville, following requests from local officials.
Beshear initiated the relief in May to counter rising fuel costs from the war in Iran and to halt a scheduled gas tax increase to 27 cents per gallon on July 1.
An estimated $26.8 million monthly loss to the Road Fund led Committee Chairman Ken Upchurch to call the action "terrible public policy," citing a potential 17% decline in road aid.
Gasoline and diesel prices will increase by 10 cents per gallon starting Thursday, June 11, in areas that did not request an extension.
Debate continues over using the Budget Reserve Trust Fund to replace lost revenue, with officials warning that individual savings of about $4 monthly may not justify potential road maintenance costs.
