UK Strengthens Journalist Safety with Dedicated Liaison Officers
Every UK police force now has a Journalist Safety Liaison Officer to support press freedom and address rising threats, part of a national plan launched in October 2023.
- On Monday, the British government announced every UK police force now has a Journalist Safety Liaison Officer, including all 43 forces in England and Wales plus British Transport Police and Counter Terror Policing.
- Launched under the National Action Plan in October 2023, journalists have increasingly become targets both online and on the ground in recent years.
- Under the new system, Journalist Safety Liaison Officers act as a single point of contact offering support and safety guidance, with the Government and NPCC building on roles in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
- Media Minister Ian Murray said `Too often, journalists are put in harm's way while fulfilling their vital role of delivering accurate news to the public`, and Dawn Alford of the Society of Editors welcomed the move.
- The plan aims to help journalists carry out their role informing the public and holding power to account, while a report found many journalists no longer reported threats due to time-consuming processes and stretched resources in local newsrooms.
