Abbott bolstering security around Texas religious spaces

The Texas Department of Public Safety will deploy troopers, special agents, and Rangers to prevent threats after multiple deadly attacks on U.S. places of worship this year, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to bolster security surrounding places of worship in Texas after a rise in nationwide attacks.
  • Amid the run-up to the second anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2025 terrorist attacks, Abbott cited a recent deadly attack in Minneapolis and other incidents to justify increased church security.
  • DPS said the operation will deploy Texas Highway Patrol troopers, DPS Criminal Investigations Division special agents and Texas Rangers to identify threats, while the public should report tips via the iWatchTexas Community Reporting System or call 1-844-643-2251.
  • Abbott said `Places of worship are sacred` and pledged to marshal all resources with DPS, local law enforcement and faith communities to ensure Texans can worship freely and safely.
  • Under state law, churches may form volunteer church security teams and licensed carriers can enter unless Penal Code 30.06 or 30.07 signage is posted, while state legislature security grants provide hundreds of millions for synagogues and churches.
