Nigeria: Kano Governor's Defection Puts Deputy On the Spot
The resignation of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and his expected formal registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC) has put his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, under intense political scrutiny, as he remains in the NNPP and has openly reaffirmed his loyalty to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
An additional Nigerian governor defected and left the opposition and was expected to formally join the Congress of Progressiveists (APC), the majority party, on Monday, January 26, 2026, according to his spokesman. This time it was Abba Kabir Yusuf, who led the Federated State of Kano, Nigeria's second most populous region. This defection completely changed the political field as the general elections in early 2027 in Nigeria approached.
