Gosport MP and Culture Committee to Examine UK's Poor Performance at Eurovision
The committee will hear from BBC figures and music experts as it examines why the UK has finished 15th or lower in most recent contests.
- A cross-party committee of MPs will scrutinize the UK's Eurovision selection process, aiming to reverse a string of poor performances. Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage announced the state of play inquiry following a public callout earlier this year.
- The UK has consistently placed near the bottom in recent years, receiving "nul points" in 2021, 2024, and 2025. Aside from Sam Ryder's second-place finish in 2022, the country has not placed above 15th position in 15 years.
- Committee members will investigate whether the BBC's selection process produces poor results due to song choice or performance. "We want to get to the bottom of who chooses our entrant," Dinenage said, with the hearing held over the coming months.
- The 2027 contest in Burgas, Bulgaria, coincides with this inquiry and marks 30 years since the UK last won with Katrina and the Waves' "Love Shine a Light." The investigation seeks to prevent another "dismal" result.
- Ireland and other nations have withdrawn from the contest, citing Israel's inclusion amid the war in Gaza. On Thursday, Ireland confirmed it will boycott the 2027 contest for a second year, citing the "appalling and ongoing loss of lives in Gaza.
