Gophers men's hoops picked to finish 13th in Big Ten
Minnesota returned three starters and added transfers, but voters gave the Gophers no preseason honors and only three votes for Cade Tyson.
On Monday, The Columbus Dispatch released its annual preseason poll of 27 conference reporters, picking the Minnesota Gophers to finish 13th in the 18-team Big Ten.
The team looks to improve after an injury-ravaged Minnesota squad finished 11th in the league last year with a 15-18 overall record and 8-12 in conference play.
Entering coach Niko Medved's second season, the Gophers retained starters Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, Isaac Asuma, and Bobby Durkin while adding North Carolina transfer Kyan Evans and 7-foot-2 Michigan center Malick Kordel.
Crocker-Johnson said at the team's internal media day last Thursday, "I feel like we can do a lot of things special." The squad may regain leading scorer Cade Tyson if his Oct. 13 eligibility hearing in Colorado succeeds.
Minnesota received no votes for individual plaudits in the poll, while Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears earned preseason player of the year, Ohio State forward Anthony Thomas freshman of the year, and Illinois guard Stefan Vaaks transfer of the year.
