GOP governors promote conservative family monikers to rebrand June
The proclamations are symbolic and promote a married husband, wife and children model as governors counter Pride Month with conservative messaging.
Republican governors in states including Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Utah have designated June with conservative titles like "Nuclear Family Month" and "Fidelity Month," promoting a specific family structure of married husband, wife, and children.
While these designations lack legal authority, they serve as public statements endorsing specific family dynamics. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee cited "God's design" for marriage in their proclamations.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox pivoted from previously recognizing Pride Month, while Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith shared a graphic captioned "Take back the Rainbow!" Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles posted "Homosexuality has no place in America" before deleting it.
LGBTQ+ advocates criticized the alternative branding as an attempt to erase vulnerable communities. Project Rainbow stated that Pride Month provides vital resources and spaces for queer youth to thrive.
Federal data from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey highlights why these celebrations matter: more than three in five LGBTQ+ high school students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in the previous year.
