Google’s Updated Veo Model Can Make Vertical Videos From Reference Images with 4K Upscaling

The update enables native 9:16 vertical video creation and upscaling to 4K for social platforms, improving video quality and consistency, Google said.

  • Yesterday, Google updated Veo 3.1 to generate native 9:16 vertical videos from reference images and rolled out enhanced features in the Gemini app, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube Create app.
  • The Ingredients to Video tool now accepts up to three reference images, and Veo 3.1 is tuned to improve character expressions and consistency across clips.
  • Veo still produces base clips at 720p, but the update adds improved upscaling to 1080p and 4K via Flow, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI for professional workflows.
  • Creators can now blend characters, backgrounds, objects and textures to craft cohesive outputs for short clips, and Google says the update makes videos `more expressive and creative` with `richer dialogue and storytelling`.
  • Observers note Veo 3.1’s 4K output is via upscaling rather than native 4K claim , and Google reintroduced 1080p support today, suggesting quality differences amid 2025-style quality jumps.
