Google to invest $25 billion in data centers and AI infrastructure across largest U.S. electric grid

PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 16 – The $3 billion deal secures 3 gigawatts of carbon-free hydropower to meet growing electricity demands from AI and data center expansion, supporting Google’s 24/7 clean energy goal.

  • On Tuesday, Google agreed to pay more than $3 billion, finalizing 20-year PPAs for 670 MW from two Pennsylvania hydroelectric plants.
  • Amid surging AI electricity needs, hyperscalers are securing new power, with Google’s framework enabling up to 3 GW of hydropower sourcing from Brookfield Asset Management’s Hydro Framework Agreement, part of its $75 billion plan.
  • Working with PJM Interconnection, Google is using AI to accelerate grid hookups, while Brookfield Renewable Partners detailed infrastructure upgrades, outlining relicensing steps and AI-driven integration with PJM Interconnection.
  • These contracts will support relicensing efforts to extend operations, with Amanda Peterson Corio noting that hydropower provides dependable, low-cost, carbon-free electricity that creates jobs and strengthens the grid.
  • Beyond Pennsylvania, the framework will cover other U.S. regions, and Brookfield said it will extend the framework to new markets.
