Google AI Lets Canadians Buy From Lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart without Leaving App

The feature lets shoppers buy through Gemini using Google Pay, with 59% of Canadians expected to use an AI tool for holiday shopping, Google said.

  • On Wednesday, Google Canada launched an instant-checkout feature for its Gemini AI chatbot, enabling users to purchase directly from Lululemon Athletica Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart, La Maison Simons, and select Shopify Inc. merchants without leaving the app.
  • The rollout follows similar launches in the U.S. and Australia earlier this year, as tech companies race to turn conversational AI into digital points of sale. Google competes directly against Meta Platforms Inc.'s Muse agent.
  • Transactions process securely through Google Pay using encrypted payment details. Initially, the Canadian feature limits purchases to one item at a time, preventing multi-product carts unless users visit retailer websites directly.
  • Marketing professor David Soberman at the University of Toronto cautioned that consumers should not assume AI agents provide the lowest price, noting search results are constrained by advertising relationships. Vass Bednar questions whether AI can prioritize specific consumer needs.
  • Google Canada expects 59 per cent of Canadians to use AI tools for holiday shopping this year, reflecting broader integration of AI assistants into the purchasing process as the crucial shopping season approaches.
