Google Has a Free Flight Simulator You Can Pilot
The experimental simulator is free to use in Google Chrome and Apple Safari, and Google said it added features from the desktop edition.
- Google launched a free Google Earth Flight Simulator on its web platform on June 12, allowing users to explore the globe from above. The company announced the feature was added "just for fun," alongside other tools migrated from the professional desktop edition.
- Previously, Google offered a hidden flight simulator within Google Earth in 2007, but that version required users to download and install the desktop software. The browser version eliminates this barrier to casual access.
- You can access the simulator through Google Chrome or Safari using arrow keys to maneuver and Page Down inputs to adjust speed. The simulation pauses on crashes, allowing players to restart without penalty.
- Arrival of the browser version gained significant attention on Twitter with 5.5 million views. Users posted, "Finally I can crash a jet into my own house in 4K resolution directly from a browser tab," while others admitted, "This is great, but controlling is too hard for me."
- Aimed at casual users rather than professionals, Developers designed the Google Earth Flight Simulator to be accessible and forgiving. Thankfully, the simulation pauses on crashes, letting players channel their inner Fox McClouds without mockery or frustration.
