Google Gemini and Search Gain Agentic Commerce Tools Backed by Flipkart, Wayfair and Target: How Shopping Will Change
Google's Universal Commerce Protocol enables AI agents to handle product research and checkout with support from major retailers and 20 payment firms, starting with US shoppers.
- On Sunday, Google unveiled the Universal Commerce Protocol at the National Retail Federation's Big Show, with Sundar Pichai and John Furner present, enabling eligible US shoppers to browse and buy via the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search.
- The protocol was built with major retailers and payments partners to create a common language for agents, endorsed by about 20 payments players including Adyen, PayPal Holdings, Stripe, Worldpay, Mastercard and Visa, and backed by Shopify, Target and Walmart, Google said Sunday.
- Google's shopping features include agent pre-filled checkouts and stored shipping in Google Wallet, while businesses can train a Business Agent via Merchant Center and use Direct Offers to target AI Mode shoppers.
- Smaller merchants face strain from a flood of agentic protocols and limited tech budgets, while automated agent shopping tools could boost sales and payment-network fees for merchants.
- In the coming months, Google will expand globally and add loyalty and discovery features, and the protocol will soon let AI Mode and Gemini users purchase directly from Best Buy, Lowe's and Walmart, the company said.
