Google Launches an Offline AI Dictation App on iOS
The app offers live transcription, usage stats and editing tools, while an optional Gemini mode adds more polishing.
- On Monday, Google released "Google AI Edge Eloquent," a free iOS dictation app using on-device "Gemma" architecture to transcribe speech and automatically remove filler words like "um" and "uh."
- Users can choose between "On-device mode" for full offline privacy or "Enhanced text polishing," which sends data to cloud-based Gemini for advanced editing. Google claims the app offers "uncompromising privacy" for local-only processing.
- The app automatically removes "filler" words while providing "Usage stats" including word count and speaking speed. Users can connect Gmail accounts to import specific vocabulary, improving transcription accuracy over time.
- Currently limited to iOS, the app is unavailable in Switzerland and the European Union pending regulatory approval, despite Google positioning it as a "premium AI voice dictation without subscription" service.
- Competing with established dictation tools like Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper, the app currently supports only English and lacks keyboard support, though Google promises "seamless Android integration" in future updates.
