EU to Replace Passport Stamps with Digital Checks From October

29 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES INCLUDING SCHENGEN STATES, JUL 30 – The Entry/Exit System will replace passport stamps with biometric data for 29 European countries and aims to detect overstayers and reduce identity fraud, the European Commission said.

  • The European Union will begin rolling out the new Entry/Exit System for non-EU nationals at Schengen area external borders on October 12, 2025.
  • This rollout follows months of preparation and aims to digitally record entries and exits, replacing manual passport stamps while improving border management.
  • The EES will capture biometric data including fingerprints and facial images for short-stay visits up to 90 days in 29 European Schengen and associated countries.
  • EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the system will enhance security by tracking overstayers and detecting document and identity fraud through reliable border data.
  • Member states will fully deploy the EES over six months, with the system expected to be operational at all border points by spring 2026, implying more automated but cautious travel procedures.
