EU to Replace Passport Stamps with Digital Checks From October
29 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES INCLUDING SCHENGEN STATES, JUL 30 – The Entry/Exit System will replace passport stamps with biometric data for 29 European countries and aims to detect overstayers and reduce identity fraud, the European Commission said.
- The European Union will begin rolling out the new Entry/Exit System for non-EU nationals at Schengen area external borders on October 12, 2025.
- This rollout follows months of preparation and aims to digitally record entries and exits, replacing manual passport stamps while improving border management.
- The EES will capture biometric data including fingerprints and facial images for short-stay visits up to 90 days in 29 European Schengen and associated countries.
- EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the system will enhance security by tracking overstayers and detecting document and identity fraud through reliable border data.
