Mastercard Outage Sparks Payment Issues Across Australia
Down Detector logged more than 2,000 reports as banks said the outage was a worldwide Mastercard issue affecting digital wallet and tap-and-go payments.
On Saturday afternoon, a global Mastercard failure disrupted tap-and-go payments across Australia, leaving shoppers struggling with declined transactions at checkouts.
Down Detector recorded more than 2,000 reports from users experiencing payment declines since 12pm AWST, as Commonwealth Bank, NAB, and Westpac confirmed the worldwide issue is impacting their customers.
The disruption specifically affects digital wallets on Android devices, though physical debit and credit cards, along with ATM services, remain fully operational across the country.
Businesses are urging customers to use physical cards or cash while the issue persists, and CommBank advised customers to "insert your card and select 'savings' to make payments via EFTPOS."
Mastercard has been contacted for comment regarding the outage, which has stalled checkouts in major cities including Sydney and Melbourne, with no planned maintenance scheduled for Saturday.
