Glasgow John Lewis to be transformed into £20m 'retail destination' with work beginning this month
The year-long overhaul will add new brands and services across five floors while the store stays open, with work set to finish by spring 2027.
On Wednesday, John Lewis announced a £20 million refurbishment of its Buchanan Galleries Glasgow branch, a 12-month project modernizing the 28,000-square-metre site while maintaining daily operations.
The investment forms part of the John Lewis Partnership's wider £800 million transformation plan to modernize UK stores, supporting the Glasgow flagship that opened in 1999 and employs more than 300 partners.
Upgrades will occur in phases, starting with a new 'World of Tech' and sports department expected by late September, continuing through late spring 2027 to 'improve the customer experience.'
Buchanan Galleries Centre Director Kathy Murdoch welcomed the investment as a 'powerful vote of confidence' in the city; Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken added it ensures the store remains a key shopping attraction for another 30 years.
Minister for Business and Fair Work Tom Arthur stated the refurbishment should act as a 'catalyst' for further city centre investment, positioning the project to set a new retail standard in Scotland.
