Glasgow Central Station to re-open exit as demolition after fire continues

The upper Hope Street exit will operate as exit-only to enhance passenger safety during ongoing demolition after the March 8 fire severely damaged a nearby building.

  • Network Rail will reopen the upper Hope Street exit from Sunday, March 22, operating as exit-only to provide a safe way out of Glasgow Central Station after the fire.
  • The fire began in a vape shop on March 8, spreading through the neighbouring Union Corner building; demolition of the remaining facade began Wednesday and was expected to finish by Friday.
  • Passengers arriving on platforms seven to 10 will be guided along a managed corridor to Hope Street, while train services continue on platforms seven to 15 only and the 1733 service to East Kilbride has resumed after almost two weeks.
  • Glasgow City Council said the safety cordon will remain while rubble is removed because large vehicles will still be in the area, with contractors working 7am- 7pm from March 21 and security backed by police over the weekend.
  • The recovery package and gradual reopening aim to reduce disruption for commuters and retailers after Glasgow Central Station, Scotland's busiest, partially reopened on March 18 following about a 10-day closure.
