It was in the spring of 2020 that Porsche announced that both the Boxter and the Cayman (718) would be electrified and that the current generation would be the latest with gasoline engine. Now it is clear that it will not. Porsche has changed its mind again and has re-thinked its strategic decisions for the future. This includes further development of its iconic six-cylinder boxer engine, which will also be inside the next 718 generation.

Porsche was clear. Full electrification was its main objective for the coming years. In fact, this roadmap started with the arrival of the new Porsche Macan electric, which gave full replacement to the previous generation with combustion engine. However, despite selling well, it has not received the expected draught nor has it matched in demand to its previous version.
