Yomiuri Giants baseball manager Abe resigns after arrest over allegedly assaulting his daughter
Abe admitted losing his temper while intervening in a fight between his daughters, and the Giants named an acting manager.
Tokyo police arrested Yomiuri Giants manager Shinnosuke Abe on Monday for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter at their home in Shibuya Ward after a child guidance center reported the incident shortly after 7pm.
Abe allegedly had been drinking and became furious after his older daughter talked back to him while attempting to mediate a fight between his daughters, aged 18 and 15.
The 47-year-old former star catcher accumulated 2,132 hits and 406 home runs during his 19-year professional career with the Giants, leading the Central League in batting average and RBIs in 2012 before assuming the managerial post in 2024.
Released early Tuesday, Abe faces potential disciplinary action as Giants president Toru Kunimatsu stated the club will consider "disciplinary action, including the manager's future," with offensive chief coach Hideki Hashigami assuming acting duties.
Abe has admitted to investigators he lost his temper during the family dispute, while Tokyo Metropolitan Police and the Yomiuri Giants have declined public comment as the investigation continues.
