Giant Taiwan flag flies from helicopter for national day, defying Beijing
The 12-metre-by-18-metre flag has been flown annually since 2019 as Taiwan seeks to project unity and sovereignty under Chinese pressure.
On Saturday, Taiwan's army will fly a massive 12-metre-by-18-metre flag beneath a US-made Chinook CH-47SD helicopter over Taipei during the October 10 national day celebration.
Taiwan initiated these annual aerial displays in 2019 to boost unity amid rising Chinese pressure, commemorating the 1911 uprising that established the Republic of China government.
Pilot Lin Chang-cheng called the flag a "concrete symbol of national sovereignty," while observer Hsiao Shao-chun, 44, said it represents "freedom, democracy and freedom of speech."
President Lai Ching-te will deliver a keynote address on Saturday, laying out policy objectives and cross-strait relations; Beijing previously called him "a troublemaker, creator of danger and a war-maker."
Beijing frequently objects to the flag, preventing its display at international events like the Olympics where Taiwan competes as "Chinese Taipei," as neither government formally recognizes the other.
