German cartel office investigating Temu over merchant price influencing
Germany's Federal Cartel Office probes whether Temu imposes unfair pricing conditions on merchants amid rapid revenue growth and over 19 million active German users, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Germany's Federal Cartel Office opened formal proceedings into Temu's operations targeting EU parent Whaleco Technology Limited, based in Dublin, Ireland.
- The office said it will examine conditions for traders and the company's treatment of suppliers on Temu's platform and accused Temu of breaching EU laws by failing to tackle illegal sales.
- Temu has 19.3 million active users in Germany and more than 100 million monthly European users, and its platform offering a wide variety of products has been open to German merchants for about a year.
- Temu said it adheres to laws, and an emailed statement read, `We are confident that any related concerns can be successfully resolved,` while Andreas Mundt warned such actions `could constitute significant restrictions of competition and ultimately lead to price increases on other sales channels.`
- After a European Commission inquiry in July this year, EU scrutiny intensified as experts say Temu's revenues spiked sharply in 2024 with annual turnover estimates between $30 billion and $70 billion.
