Georgia Begins Sending Out Special Tax Refund Checks: Here's What You Need to Know
State officials said more than $1 billion will go back to eligible taxpayers, with refunds capped at $250 to $500 based on filing status.
On Monday, the Georgia Department of Revenue began issuing payments from the state's $1.2 billion surplus tax rebate, with eligible taxpayers receiving funds via direct deposit or paper check.
Authorized under House Bill 1000, these rebates mark the fourth round issued under Kemp's administration since 2022; to qualify, residents must have filed timely individual income tax returns for both 2024 and 2025.
Refund amounts are capped based on filing status: up to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household, and $500 for married couples filing jointly, with payments based on tax liability.
"Georgians know best how to spend their money, not the government," Kemp said in a statement, crediting the state's balanced-budget approach for enabling the relief while other states raise taxes.
Most eligible taxpayers can expect payments in the coming weeks, with those waiting able to check status through the Georgia Tax Center website; the legislation also streamlines unclaimed property returns.
