Georgia man charged with throwing Molotov cocktail at Atlanta ICE building
Investigators recovered burned cloth, lighter fluid, a glass bottle and a lighter after the alleged attack, and Hinton faces up to 20 years in prison.
On Friday, 31-year-old Inique Hinton of Douglasville, Georgia, was charged with attempted arson and depredation of government property after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in downtown Atlanta.
Security cameras allegedly captured Hinton igniting an item and throwing it toward the multistory brick building Tuesday night, with flames spreading against the fence and investigators later recovering a lighter, lighter fluid, burned cloth, and a glass bottle at the scene.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said law enforcement's response was "exemplary" and vowed to prosecute "with extreme severity" to send a message that "this is not OK." Hinton faces up to 20 years for arson and up to 10 years for depredation if convicted.
Authorities arrested Hinton peacefully at a home in an Atlanta suburb, though court records do not currently list an attorney for the defendant as of publication.
The downtown Atlanta building houses both ICE offices and an immigration court, making it a significant federal facility. Hertzberg noted he was not aware of any prior criminal convictions for Hinton.
