Social Circle Residents Voice Approval of City Turning Off Water to Planned ICE Detention Center
Social Circle cut water to delay ICE center; Oakwood filed FOIA for documents on 1,500-bed facility amid concerns over local infrastructure capacity.
- Eric Taylor, City Manager of Social Circle, ordered on March 12 the water meter lock at the 1-million-square-foot warehouse, cutting off water and sewer service; the Social Circle City Council unanimously supported this action.
- The proposed conversions would add up to 8,500 detainees, and officials say the city of 5,000 lacks the capacity, with little DHS consultation.
- Oakwood officials voted on March 9 to ask DHS to pause the about 1,500‑bed facility and filed a FOIA for all documentation, citing incomplete environmental reviews.
- Taylor warned the lock will remain until the council orders removal or a federal court mandates it, while city officials say water stays off until ICE explains infrastructure plans; Channel 2 Action News reported no ICE response.
- Officials expect the facilities to begin hosting detainees later this spring, and towns like Oakwood and Social Circle are using water shutoffs and legal reviews to oppose DHS plans, which aim for the end of 2026.
