George Soros’ Foundations Pledge $300M for US Democracy Amid Attacks on Nonprofits
The foundation will spend $20 million this year on litigation, nonprofit defense and corruption tracking as it expands its U.S.-focused strategy.
On Wednesday, Open Society Foundations pledged $300 million toward initiatives defending democratic rights and economic security in the United States over the next five years.
The foundation previously poured at least $220 million into a multiracial, multifaith pro-democracy alliance, following a yearslong restructuring under George Soros and major layoffs.
OSF has already committed $20 million this year for strategic litigation, nonprofit defense, and tracking corruption, with Managing Director Laleh Ispahani emphasizing the strategy links civil rights with economic wellbeing.
Amid intensified scrutiny from the administration of President Donald Trump, which has accused progressive groups of supporting illegal immigration, a DOJ spokesperson declined to comment on potential inquiries into the foundation.
Research from Duke University suggests foundation support for democracy activities tripled between 2016 and 2020, as the Ford Foundation and Minnesota-based McKnight Foundation have also increased their democracy-related spending.
