Brandon Aiyuk Says He Will Sign with the Commanders if the 49ers Grant His Wish for a Release
Aiyuk says he will join Washington immediately if San Francisco releases him, as the 49ers hold him on the reserve list.
On Wednesday, disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk posted a video to Instagram demanding the San Francisco 49ers release him, stating, "Tell them boys cut me today and I'll sign with the Commanders tomorrow."
The San Francisco 49ers and Aiyuk have been at odds since last summer, when the team voided $27 million in guaranteed money after he failed to participate in rehab for a knee injury.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said in January that it was "safe to say that has played his last snap with the Niners," and Aiyuk has not spoken to Lynch or coach Kyle Shanahan since last season.
Because Aiyuk remains under contract with San Francisco, the Washington Commanders cannot publicly express interest without violating NFL tampering rules, and the team has not commented on his status.
Aiyuk could force a decision by showing up when veterans report to training camp on July 25; until then, the 49ers keep him on the reserve list, avoiding salary cap impacts.
