Malaysia asks UNHCR to temporarily cease registration of refugees
The suspension would let Malaysia manage refugee data itself and free UNHCR to focus on third-country resettlement, the deputy foreign minister said.
- On Thursday, Malaysia asked the United Nations refugee agency to temporarily halt registering new refugees, enabling the government to implement its domestic registration programme, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni said.
- The government launched the DPP in January to manage data, including identity verification, monitoring, and regulation. Through the DPP, the government can "better manage data," Lukanisman said.
- About 215,600 refugees and asylum-seekers were registered with the UNHCR in Malaysia at the end of February, with more than half being Rohingya Muslims. Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN refugee convention, limiting rights.
- Lukanisman confirmed plans to deport approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals detained in immigration centres by naval vessels, subject to Myanmar's agreement. The UNHCR stated the DPP "reflect an important step towards a nationally owned approach."
- Online hate speech targeting Rohingya has risen in recent weeks amid broader social tensions. This follows the 2021 deportation of more than 1,000 Myanmar nationals, which occurred despite rights groups' concerns that UNHCR-registered refugees were included.
