The rise of generative AI is reflected in patent filings. According to WIPO, the number of published patent families—a key indicator of inventive activity—has increased from approximately 14,000 in 2023 to over 37,800 in 2025. The years 2024 and 2025 alone account for more than 56,000 new patent families.

In 2024 and 2025, more patents were filed worldwide for generative AI systems than in the entire decade before. Germany significantly overtakes the UK.
