Gemini is reshaping the in-car experience — here’s how
The update adds conversational navigation, vehicle controls and message summaries, with Gemini Live in beta for real-time conversations.
- Google announced on Thursday that it will begin rolling out Gemini to cars with Google built-in, replacing the existing Google Assistant to provide a more advanced, conversational artificial intelligence experience for drivers.
- Replacing rigid command-and-response routines, Gemini enables drivers to speak freely to complete tasks, explore ideas, or retrieve information without translating thoughts into specific commands.
- Gemini integrates directly with vehicle systems, using manufacturer-provided owner manuals to answer questions like "How should I prepare my car for an automatic car wash?" or checking real-time battery status.
- Approximately 4 million vehicles from General Motors brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC will receive Gemini, though Google says the update will not be limited to those automakers.
- Eligible users in the United States can now begin upgrading to Gemini, with Google planning to expand support to additional languages, regions, and services like Gmail and Google Calendar in the future.
