Geely turns to 4-minute EV charging, AI in battle with BYD

  • On Wednesday, Geely unveiled a 2.2-megawatt charging system capable of charging an electric vehicle from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes, marking the industry's fastest charging speed.
  • The technology serves as a direct response to rival BYD, which earlier this year unveiled a flash-charging system capable of charging a battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
  • Using an 800-volt electrical system and AI-driven thermal control, the new battery monitors health and manages temperature in real-time. The Galaxy E5 electric SUV will debut the technology later this year.
  • Geely executive Zhang Dewang noted the charging speed is "approaching the physical limit," stating that future marginal gains from pursuing even faster speeds will become "increasingly small."
  • As Geely seeks to revive sales in China following 11 consecutive months of EV market decline through August, the company leverages its ownership of Lotus and Polestar to expand internationally.
