Geely turns to 4-minute EV charging, AI in battle with BYD
The system peaks at 2,250 kW and can charge select models from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes, Geely said.
- On Wednesday, Geely unveiled a new electric vehicle charging system in China that can charge a battery in just four minutes, the industry's fastest speed and a direct challenge to rival BYD.
- Earlier this year, BYD unveiled a Flash charging system capable of charging a battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, prompting Geely's aggressive response to aggressive competition in ultra-fast charging networks.
- Supported by a 2.2-megawatt charging infrastructure, Geely's fifth-generation system charges Lynk and Zeekr models from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes, with AI system Xingrui PowerMind maintaining average cell temperatures of 55 degrees Celsius.
- "Current charging speeds are already approaching the physical limit, and the marginal gains from pursuing even faster speeds in the future will become increasingly small," Geely executive Zhang Dewang told Reuters at the launch event.
- AFIR regulations mandate minimum power outputs on Europe's core network, requiring 400 kW by year-end and 600 kW by 2027, while Geely's Zhang envisions the future charging ecosystem resembling traditional gasoline stations with diverse brands.
