A toxic gas leak at a Bangladesh shipbreaking yard kills at least 8 workers
Authorities are investigating safety lapses after toxic gas exposure at a vessel-cutting yard killed 8 workers and left 5 missing, police said.
On Friday, toxic gas leaked from a vessel at the Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard in Chittagong, Bangladesh, killing at least eight workers, with five others missing.
Fire service official Towfiqul Islam Bhuiyan stated that safety procedures appeared to have been flouted, as the vessel should have been gas-free before cutting began but yard authorities did not follow instructions.
Firefighters recovered three bodies from the site and found several unconscious workers hospitalized; among those killed was Palash Jaladas, whose wife Bhoumika was eight months pregnant.
Senior police official Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury told AFP that authorities formed a committee to investigate and ordered an audit of the shipbreaking yard following the incident.
Bangladesh's shipbreaking industry spans a 25-kilometre stretch of the Chittagong coast and accounts for roughly 36% of global ship scrapping across about 150 yards generating $2.46 billion annually, yet labour and environmental groups have long scrutinized the sector's safety standards.
At least eight workers have been killed in a toxic gas leak at a shipbreaking yard in Bangladesh's southeastern Chattogram district, officials said Friday.
