Garfield Heights Star Marcus Johnson Wins Ohio Mr. Basketball Award for 2nd Straight Year

Johnson averaged 30.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists this season, becoming the seventh player to win Ohio Mr. Basketball twice, according to the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association.

  • On Thursday, senior Marcus Johnson of Garfield Heights High School was named 2026 Ohio Mr. Basketball by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association, which has voted on the award since 2017.
  • After a dominant season, Johnson captured the statewide panel vote by a close margin, defeating Delphos St. John’s senior Cam Elwer in this year’s balloting.
  • Sonny, Garfield Heights head coach and 1998 Mr. Basketball, said last year, 'I’m getting sick of him, breaking all my records, coming after Mr. Basketball.'
  • Now heading to South Carolina, Johnson will play collegiately for the Gamecocks this summer and become the first Ohio Mr. Basketball winner to join an SEC school.
  • Historically, Johnson joins Luke Kennard as a two-time Ohio Mr. Basketball winner, leading Garfield Heights to an 18-7 record and an OHSAA Division III semifinal loss to Archbishop Hoban.
