August's Full Sturgeon Moon Lines Up With Perseids, Saturn, Venus and Jupiter

NORTH AMERICA, AUG 01 – August 2025 brings up to 100 meteors per hour during the Perseid shower and a rare Jupiter-Venus conjunction visible in early morning skies, according to Svábhegy Observatory.

  • In mid-August, the last full moon peaks at 3:55 a.m. ET on Aug. 9, the Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight on Aug. 11–12, and Jupiter and Venus align in the predawn sky on Aug. 12.
  • Named after the sturgeon fish, which is the most primitive bony fish and dates back over 120 million years, Native Americans in the Great Lakes region relied on them as a staple food.
  • According to experts, the Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight on Aug. 11-12, delivering 50 to 70 shooting stars per hour.
  • However, about 84 percent of the moon will be illuminated, likely hampering meteor visibility during peak nights.
  • Pre-Dawn viewing reveals Venus and Jupiter will appear less than one degree apart early on Aug. 12, according to NASA.
