29 European Countries Hit by Foreign Office 'Wait Longer' Warning
Airports Council International said some airports reported 2 to 3 hour waits and flight disruptions as member states roll out biometric checks.
On Friday April 10th, the new EES border checks faced significant disruption, despite European Commission claims the system would be "fully operational" by that date.
The EES replaces manual passport stamping with mandatory biometric registration of fingerprints and facial images for travellers entering the 29 Schengen countries, a process ongoing since the system launched.
Airports Council International noted "passenger waiting times of 2 to 3 hours" at border control, with "significant disruption to flight operations, with passengers missing flights and delays due to prolonged border processing times."
French border crossings, including Eurostar and Eurotunnel, face implementation delays owing "to delays in France's developing the technology needed to collate and process the biometric information," per The Guardian.
A European Commission spokesperson told The Local that Friday April 10th marked "the start of the full roll out," emphasizing it is "up to Member States" to ensure proper implementation and resource allocation.
