FSSAI tightens norms for storage, transport of perishable food items

The regulator warned that poor temperature control can trigger microbial growth and spoilage, and said non-compliance may lead to seizure and destruction.

  • On Sunday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued an advisory directing Food Business Operators to maintain prescribed temperature conditions for perishable items including khoa, paneer, meat, and fish throughout the supply chain.
  • Dated October 15, the advisory addresses concerns that improper handling makes perishable products susceptible to microbial growth and spoilage, particularly ahead of festivals when food safety compliance becomes critical.
  • Operators must use clean, covered vehicles and food-grade packaging, avoiding non-food-grade materials like gunny bags, while FBOs are required to protect products from dust, moisture, pests, and cross-contamination during transit.
  • FSSAI has asked Commissioners of Food Safety in all states, Union Territories, and Indian Railways to maintain strict vigilance during inspections, with non-compliance triggering seizure and destruction of affected products.
  • These directives reinforce requirements stipulated under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011, requiring operators to maintain proper records and traceability for all consignments.
