FSSAI Bans Select Diageo, Inbrew Products over Misleading Flavour Additives
FSSAI said the products used added flavours and misleading age claims, and some stock may be sold only with revised front-label disclosures.
- On Sunday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prohibited sales of select rum and whisky brands from United Spirits Ltd and INBREW Beverages for using unauthorized artificial flavors and misleading labeling.
- Laboratory tests revealed manufacturers masked natural profiles with artificial additives, violating standards requiring characteristic taste to stem from fermentation; some brands made misleading "7 years old blended" claims despite containing less than 5% matured spirit.
- Affected products include United Spirits' Antiquity Blue Whisky, Royal Challenge Whisky, and McDowell's No 1 Rum, alongside INBREW Beverages' Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky and Old Cask Deluxe XXX Rum, with inspections extending to Mandexi Distilleries in Goa.
- Following appeals, the FSSAI conditionally revoked prohibition orders, permitting existing stock sales if labels prominently state "rum-flavoured spirit" or "whisky-flavoured spirit" on the front of the pack.
- The regulator clarified that flavorings are permitted for substances like vanilla, yet issued notices to six other Maharashtra manufacturers regarding similar violations, with further action expected soon.
