French bulldog frenzy may be cooling in U.S., but dachshunds are riding high
- For the tenth year in a row, the French Bulldog took West Palm Beach's top spot and was also #1 in Washington, D.C. and Columbus, OH in the American Kennel Club's 2025 rankings.
- Last year, the AKC's registry added about 54,000 Frenchie last year, based on registration data covering 202 breeds, including puppies and older purebreds.
- Among notable shifts, the Dachshund landed at number five for the first time since 2003, the Poodle slipped to sixth after holding fifth from 2021 to 2024, and the Yorkshire Terrier climbed from 13th to eighth.
- Quoting the AKC, DiNardo explained 'There is a reason the French Bulldog has spent 10 years as the top dog,' and Munden cautioned breed trends fluctuate with social media and breeders.
- The kennel club notes its rankings exclude mixed-breed dogs and hybrids like goldendoodles and Pomskies, while the AKC has added more than 50 types since 2000, with the coton de tulear jumping from 92nd to 79th last year.
