The founder of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) Francisco Sánchez – Paco, for the lucky people who knew him well – died in his home in Madrid at 89 years after fighting against pulmonary fibrosis. Considered the driving force behind astrophysics in Spain, Sánchez is responsible for creating one of the leading research institutes in our country and for putting the Canary Islands on the map of science.
