French City of Lyon Bans ‘All Protests’ on October 24
The prefecture cited looting and violence after last weekend’s protests, with police arresting about 200 people.
The Rhone prefecture announced on Thursday, October 22, that all demonstrations are banned in Lyon this Saturday, October 24, following widespread street violence from the previous week's cost-of-living protests.
Last weekend's October 17 march drew between 550,000 and 800,000 participants, resulting in widespread looting and violence that prompted authorities to implement the restrictive Saturday ban.
Lyon Mayor Gregory Doucet reported his city experienced hours of "chaos" during the riots, with between 150 and 200 shops looted and a tourist office torched.
Despite the ban, organizers called for "Acte II" nationwide demonstrations this Saturday, while officials imposed three nights of curfews in parts of Lyon to protect shopping districts.
Traders on prediction market Kalshi estimate an 11% chance of France declaring a state of emergency before November 1, 2026, with 37,588 contracts traded as investors monitor the unrest.
This prefect's decision comes after several measures taken in recent days: a curfew in the hyper-centre for three nights and a ban on a demonstration scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
The French city of Lyon has banned all protests for this coming Saturday, after demonstrations last week escalated into large-scale violence. ‘Yellow vests’ have once again announced actions throughout the country.
