France's Macron declines interior minister's offer to resign
Macron kept Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez in office and ordered new security tactics after 2,397 arrests and 997 officer injuries, officials said.
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation of French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, citing the "need for continued command of law enforcement in the current context" following weekend riots.
Nationwide protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions erupted into violence Saturday, resulting in at least 2,400 arrests as rioters looted businesses and set fires across Paris, Lyon, and Marseille.
Speaking on France Inter Monday, Laurent Nunez acknowledged Authorities had "lost control" in some major cities while blaming violence on "hordes of troublemakers and looters" and "far-left activists."
Macron instructed Laurent Nunez to implement "new policing tactics on the ground as quickly as possible" and ensure transparency regarding failures in planning and intelligence gathering that led to the violence.
Flames engulfed the 19th-century City Hall in Limoges, nearly destroying the building, while Marseille Authorities banned any protest from noon to 8 p.m. Monday to prevent further confrontations.
The Head of State instructed the Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to introduce, as soon as possible, new methods of dealing with law enforcement violators.
