Europeans warn Iran of UN sanctions if no progress on nuclear deal
FRANCE, JUL 18 – France, the UK, and Germany plan to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran by end of August due to Iran's failure to make verifiable commitments on its nuclear program, diplomats said.
- Amid stalled negotiations, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the European Troika will trigger UN 'snapback' sanctions against Iran if no progress is made by late August.
- Reaching a deal, Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA following US and Israeli strikes last month, complicating negotiations.
- In the JCPOA, the snapback mechanism under the 2015 deal allows any party to notify the UN Security Council of non-compliance, with China and Russia unable to veto, under French and European Union officials' statements, no attribution.
- In response, Iran warned it may isolate European states from its nuclear programme and could withdraw from the NPT, risking legal consequences for non-compliance.
- European governments plan to invoke the 'snapback' mechanism before October 18, 2025, offering leverage if no progress on Iran's nuclear deal is made, as pressure mounts on diplomats.
