France threatens to block funds for India over climate inaction
France threatens to withhold €500 million in EU climate funds to India over lack of updated emissions plans, urging stronger commitments to meet Paris Agreement goals.
In Brussels on Tuesday, France warned it could block EU climate funds to India, including a 500 million euros payment, if India does not act, Monique Barbut said.
Amid missed UN deadlines, more than 60 countries failed to produce updated NDCs, which are five-year emission plans under the Paris Agreement.
Monique Barbut, France's ecological transition minister, told AFP 'I am not in favour of such funding until India submits a NDC' and urged Brussels to take a more transactional approach.
Monday, EU climate ministers will debate the bloc's climate diplomacy as France warned it may block funds to India, the world's third-largest emitter.
Linking trade and climate, France warned it may withhold 500 million euros from India unless it submits an NDC, as Monique Barbut indicated she told the European Commission this means funding depends on action.
