France Recalls More Condoms over Manufacturing Defects

  • On Friday, French Anti-fraud agency DGCCRF and health agency DGS announced a one-year suspension of sales and imports for condom brands manufactured using a faulty process that risks bursting and ripping.
  • Investigators concluded the production process for ultra-thin condoms "risks fluctuating the thickness and the quality of the latex," creating increased risks of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy.
  • Agencies identified 30 condom lines on online marketplaces lacking the required conformity seal, with around 1,000 boxes containing more than 40,000 condoms already sold to consumers.
  • Japanese company Okamoto Industries manufactured two of the affected lines, while French brands Lubie and Friday Bae also faced recall; Lubie CEO Pierre Lagache stated the company acted "at the slightest doubt."
  • This marks the second recent recall; French agencies previously recalled approximately 260,000 condoms in August for identical manufacturing issues, and the government retains the option to renew the suspension if necessary.
