- Russia has said it is protecting Assad on 'humanitarian grounds' and Sergei Lavrov confirmed he still lives in Moscow after last week's meeting, with no extradition discussed.
- The ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia after Islamist-led fighters seized power on December 8, and a 2023 warrant was annulled in July while he still had immunity.
