France condemns China’s execution of a French citizen held on death row for 15 years
France said Chan Thao Phoumy, 62, was on death row for more than 15 years and denied access to the final court hearing, officials said.
- On Saturday, France confirmed that China executed French citizen Chan Thao Phoumy, 62, in Guangzhou for drug trafficking after he spent more than 15 years on death row despite clemency appeals.
- A Chinese court originally sentenced Chan to death in 2010, while France abolished the death penalty in 1981 and remains a vigorous campaigner against its global use.
- Amnesty International reports that China is the world's leading executioner, putting thousands to death annually through firing squads or lethal injections in processes shrouded in secrecy.
- The French Foreign Ministry expressed "consternation" over the case, stating, "We particularly regret that Mr. Chan's defense did not have access to the final court hearing," which they called a rights violation.
- In a statement Sunday, the Chinese Embassy in Paris asserted that China treats defendants of all nationalities equally and handles all cases impartially and strictly in accordance with the law.
