Four Cheetah Cubs Found Dead in MP's Kuno National Park

  • On Tuesday, four one-month-old cheetah cubs were found dead near their den site in Kuno National Park, Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, with monitoring teams discovering partially eaten carcasses around 6.30 a.m.
  • Born to female cheetah KGP12 on April 11, these cubs were the first to be born in the open forest since Project Cheetah launched in 2022; the mother remains safe and healthy in the wild.
  • Madhya Pradesh Principal Chief Conservator Samita Rajora noted that post-mortem examinations revealed marks of a leopard attack; Kuno Field Director and Project Cheetah Director Uttam Kumar Sharma said a thorough investigation is underway.
  • With the latest deaths, India's total cheetah population has fallen to 53, with 50 remaining at Kuno and three cheetahs at the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in Mandsaur and Neemuch districts.
  • The incident marks the largest number of cheetah casualties in one instance at Kuno, following last year's deaths when two cubs died including one struck by a vehicle on the Agra Mumbai National Highway in Gwalior.
