Lightning Strike Kills Swimmer, Hospitalizes 3 Others at Popular Beach
Responders found four patients after the strike, and a bystander used an automated external defibrillator and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before crews arrived.
On Friday afternoon, a lightning strike at the 6600 block of Estero Blvd in Fort Myers Beach left one person dead and three others injured. Responders arrived before 3 p.m. to find four patients.
Before emergency crews arrived, a bystander deployed an automated external defibrillator and performed CPR on the victims. Despite these lifesaving efforts, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three survivors were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation, though officials provided no update on their conditions as of Saturday morning. Responders initially found four patients upon arrival.
The Fort Myers Beach Fire District urged residents and visitors to monitor weather conditions and seek immediate shelter upon hearing thunder or observing lightning. The district emphasized staying aware of environmental risks.
Fire officials advise that no outdoor location is safe during a thunderstorm, recommending individuals avoid water and tall objects and wait 30 minutes after hearing thunder before returning outside.
