Fort Lauderdale Mayor's Ex Partner Found Dead by Possible Suicide, Police Say

Police said the death came a day after a judge eased a no-contact order in the domestic violence case.

  • Daniel Curran, the 35-year-old former partner of Democrat Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, died by suicide on his birthday Thursday. Police found Curran outside Coral Ridge Towers following reports of a jump from the 12th-floor balcony.
  • The couple's relationship was tumultuous, leading Trantalis to file a domestic violence injunction. Last November, Curran allegedly assaulted the mayor, dragging him approximately 15 feet across a road, resulting in battery charges.
  • On Wednesday, Judge Susan Alspector modified the no-contact order after Trantalis testified he no longer considered Curran a threat. The modification allowed limited phone, digital, and in-public contact between the two men.
  • Responding to the death, Trantalis expressed "profound sorrow," while Curran's attorney Philip Johnston described his client as a "very kind, sensitive person." Johnston said the former couple had happily discussed future plans the night before.
