Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra freed early from parole after receiving royal pardon
The pardon applies to prisoners with less than one year remaining, officials said, and will end Thaksin Shinawatra’s probation and ankle monitoring early.
Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was granted a royal pardon by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, effectively wiping away the final three months of his remaining prison sentence.
The decree officially frees the 76-year-old billionaire from all remaining parole restrictions, including the requirement to wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and check in monthly with probation officers.
Thaksin qualified for full release under a broad royal decree issued to mark Queen Suthida’s birthday, which selectively clears parolees who have less than one year remaining on their active sentences.
The pardon brings a definitive end to a highly turbulent legal saga for the polarizing populist, who returned to Thailand in August 2023 following 15 years of self-imposed exile to face corruption and abuse of power charges.
Though his legal obligations are fulfilled, political observers anticipate he will continue to wield deep influence over the ruling Pheu Thai Party, which is a major anchor in Thailand's governing coalition.
